Latest News from Meribel - The Snow has arrived and we are loving it!

White Stuff! The Snow has arrived here in Meribel. We've dug out the snug clothing, changed to snow tyres and are feeling Winter Ready.

This is a season to get excited about with improvements to lifts, critical piste re-shaping, a new lookpark, a major boost to snow making facilities and an extension for one of our favourite Meribel Bar/Restaurants.

New Roc de Tougnete ski lift

A brand new, speedy 6 Man Chair has been added above Motteret that will carry you up to the Summit in a little more than 3 minutes. This promises to be a popular place this season, the views are spectacular and the pistes you can access retain brilliant quality snow thanks to their northern aspect. The new chair replaces the well-worn and well loved, Roc de Tougne twin drag lifts. Whilst we welcome the ease with which the masses will access this brilliant area, it’s also with a tinge of sadness that one of Meribel’s best kept secrets is out. The slow, difficult drag lifts kept it a peaceful, snowy haven for those with strong enough knees to get up there. Now everyone will benefit from improved access over to the Les Menuires ski area. The lift is designed to operate in high winds, keeping this 3 Vallées link open even in bad weather conditions. Change is a mixed blessing sometimes, and you’re bound to hear this controversial development discussed at length in Meribel’s bars this season. We’d love to hear what you think….

Piste re-shaping Lac de la Chambre

Familiar to lots of you as the return route from Val Thorens, the Lac de la Chambre piste had a couple of challenging steeper sections which could prove fairly hazardous on a busy day. The re-shaping work has now been completed and has meant the run can be re-classified as a blue rather than a red. After a full day charging about Val Thorens this will be a welcome relief to many skiers who, by that time have turned their minds to an après drink, rather than tackling steep runs. It also opens up a spectacular and wild part of Méribel’s ski area to more novice skiers. #Tip – don’t get carried away and miss the Plan de Mains chair lift, unless you fancy a long, flat path to Motteret (Boarders take note).

Meribel Bars and Restaurants

We caught up with 'The Meribel Mole' from Meribel Unplugged He has been sniffing around to discover what changes we can ecpect around town this season. This is what he dug up for us....

There are a few changes afoot:

  • A new restaurant, 'Close Up' with a magician as the owner, performing at your table it seems! It has replaced Ocimes restaurant located up in the Galerie des Cimes in town centre.
  • The Barometer Bar has had a big re vamp and now has a separate restaurant section.
  • There is a new English owned bar opening just below the Taverne by the bus stops. Should be another very popular haunt for the Brits.
  • LDV in Meribel now has live music every afternoon at Apres ski.
  • All the others are to my knowledge the same or similar as 2017 so loads of choices for both restaurants and bars.

Other News...

Meribel has a new family/novice friendly park this season. Formally the moon park, this area has been revamped with a new look and rebranded The Elements Park. It features small and medium sized boarder cross, fun cross, whoops and tables. Equally suited for teens, littlies and full growns too. Come and perfect your park skills to get that Ultimate Instagram Moment and make your friends back at home green with envy.

Beginners can look forward to a brand new Covered Magic Carpet area in Meribel, just next to the Rond Point bar. This provides a safe place for starter skiers and boarders and tiny tots. The magic carpet system is the simplest of all the beginner lifts. Straighten up your skis with the conveyor belt and let it take you up just far enough to practise your first few turns…..and repeat!

The 3 Valleys has outstanding snow making facilities and because of the high altitude and the aspects of the runs the resorts are as ‘Snow Sure’ as you can get. Despite this, Meribel still continues to invest in the production and preserving of the snow cover. The Altiport reservoir has more than doubled in capacity, allowing over 65% of Meribel Alpina’s ski area to be equipped with snow cannons.
