With the Easter holidays fast approaching, booking some time away with the kids seems like a wonderful way to burn off the Easter eggs and have some much needed fun at the same time. But if the little ones have never been skiing and you yearn to have some slope time too, then teaching them some basics before you jet off to the white powder is a good idea. It should help to eradicate some of the tears and frustration before booking them into ski school!

Here are a few basic positions the kids can practice, try a dry slope first to get them in the swing of it.

  • Between the legs - Kids need to learn to stand on their own two feet – literally. To prevent them hanging off you get them to practice slightly bending their knees and standing as if they were about to push off the slopes.
  • Holding hands, side by side - Help your child find their own balance. Practice holding hands without pulling each other over. This will help both you and your child have some independence but closeness at the same time. Once you are on piste, this will help you both feel more in control - Next to each other with ski poles. If your little beginner is unstable at first, then holding onto ski poles will help them to find their balance. Thisis the next step up from side by side holding hands.
  • Go ski-less - Run in front, behind, to the side and catch them when they inevitably fall. Knowing that you are there will help give your child the confidence to make mistakes and practice until they are nearly perfect.
