Here at Ski Blanc we know everything there is to know about providing a perfect holiday for our customers, but there are some strange skiing facts that even we didn’t know about...

Norwegian Roots

The original word for ski actually came from the Norwegian language. The word ‘ski’ in Norwegian means, literally, a piece of wood. It dates back to around 4000BC, and there are even some ancient carvings that denote this cool activity.

Sherlock Holmes?

Apparently the creator of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, was the first Englishman to write about the joy of skiing. He raved about the sport after visiting Switzerland back in 1893. This is as close to social media as you could get back in the day!

Ski or Drive?

For those with a need for speed, how about swapping those four wheels for a set of skis? Olympic skiers can hit speeds of up to 120 miles per hour without a single horsepower in sight! The world record is actually 156 miles per hour, held by an Italian skier who goes by the name of Simone Origone.

North Korea or Switzerland?

Yes it’s true! North Korea has fallen in love with skiing and they do it in some style. There are over 80 countries that enjoy some form of skiing, and the global popularity of the slopes means it’s no surprise that Ski Blanc always has customers returning each year!
