Staying safe on the slopes is an important aspect of any ski holiday. You should be aware of the rules and regulations for ski and snowboard conduct, as laid out by the International Ski Federation (FIS). It might just keep you and others around you safe this ski holiday, with the number one rule being that the skier in front has the priority.

Collisions – Remember to always be aware of your surroundings and stay in control of your skiing. Another major tip is to always check uphill before you set off. Be aware of skiers and snowboarders as they follow different lines down the mountain, leaving some blind to others at certain turns.

Bindings – Before taking to the slopes ensure your ski bindings are accurate and are chosen based on your height, weight, skiing ability and age. An incorrectly adjusted bind could cause you serious leg and knee injuries.

Be Wary of Ice and Stones – Large patches of ice can appear where skiers have scraped soft snow through passage on the lower slopes. If you’re experienced you’ll be aware and know how to make your edges hold. For others, never turn on the ice; move through to powdered snow first. As snow is moved from the centre to the edges during the season, be aware of stones that could cause problems.

Appropriate Safety Wear – No matter how silly you think you might look, you’ll look even sillier in a full body cast! Wear a safety helmet and lightweight body armour where appropriate. Your safety is the most important aspect of skiing.

The Conditions – Weather conditions can change drastically and quickly at altitude. Keep an eye out for frostbite and wear layers of clothing that will have you covered in a multitude of conditions.
