If you want to experience something a little different, it is only natural to be inquisitive and curious about skiing off-piste and seeing what life is like away from the prepared and safer ski runs. You should always be aware of the safety aspects to consider should you wish to do so, but don’t let it put you off. Just be sensible and you’ll have some fun in a safe way.

Never Go Alone – The only way you can safely enjoy skiing off-piste is you have an experienced local guide with you. The person should be someone who knows the terrain and the safest places to ski.

Only Venture Out in Good Weather – Despite the warnings, and if you have the aid of a local guide, you should be ok to venture out when there are stable snow conditions, making it easier for you to avoid rocks and tree stumps.

Be Avalanche Ready – If you do get caught in an avalanche be prepared to lose your skis and poles quickly, making swimming motions to the surface. Always wear an avalanche transceiver to help rescuers and spit or urinate to discover which way up you are facing. Your rucksack should include a collapsible probe and shovel for the worst scenario.

If you’d like to challenge yourself to some off-piste skiing, why not choose a chalet in Meribel through Ski Blanc. We have a wide range of chalet services available, giving you access to some of the best slopes around. We look forward to welcoming you.
