Via Ferrata climbing, as a form was first introduced by Italian soldiers in the Dolomites. This way of climbing gave them the chance to scale mountain faces much more easily, safely and quickly than they had been able to do so previously. Since then it has become a popular pastime and sport, making mountain climbing accessible for youngsters and beginners who never thought they’d be able to scale these heights due to safety concerns.

In Meribel there are Via Ferrata routes you can follow, with trained guides, allowing you to follow marked routes, with help from bridges, ladders and steps along the way. Via Ferrata means ‘Iron Road’ in Italian, with climbers being attached to a steel cable along the route to add a layer of security to proceedings.

As you can see there is more to Meribel as a destination that just a skiing resort, you can also encounter the wonderful world of Via Ferrata rock climbing, giving you an adrenaline rush of mountain climbing with some added safety, utilising an historic tradition.
