As a newbie on the ski slopes it is a lot of fun, but you have to be aware of the risks involved! If you are planning to take a ski holiday next winter you’ve got the time to plan in advance and be fully prepared for what’s in front of you. With the right mind-set you can have the time of your life, with your health and safety covered by a thorough preparation period. Here we take a look at a few simple steps you can take to ensure you stay safe on the slopes as a first timer.

Be Physically Prepared – Although the ski slopes are a lot of fun they also provide an intense workout for your quads and hamstrings. It's best to be prepared physically. By giving yourself the chance to build up strength in key areas through a carefully plans gym routine in the months leading up to your ski holiday, you’ll ensure that your body is ready to go and one thing you don’t have to worry about is pulling a muscle or suffering another injury that could have easily been avoided.

Make Gradual Gains – There is no point in heading straight for the difficult slopes, even if your more experienced friends are heading up that way on day one. Take your time as a newcomer and start at the easiest level you can find. That way you can get used to the movements required, make mistakes in a safer environment and then make steady progress to the more advanced runs as you become more confident and aware of your limitations.

Follow the Rules – At every ski resort you’ll find the rules of engagement when on the slopes. It is so important to adhere to these rules as they will help you to gain a sound understanding of how to stay safe, and keep others safe around you. Being in control when skiing is important as it allows you to stop and miss collisions, you should always give people downhill right of way and never stop and rest in a blind spot for other skiers. These are all important safety points, so learn them and be prepared to do whatever it takes to stay safe.

Understand the Lift System – Not all lifts are the same, but it is vitally important that you understand how to use them as it is a spot where people can easily become injured either getting on or getting off. Keep concentrated and a keen eye on the chair approaching you, as well as those in front and behind to see how they perform and how you should react.

Take a Lesson – Don’t let pride get in the way and lead to a fall. There are lessons available at every resort and at Ski Blanc we can help get you started with advice and guidance on equipment and ski lessons to get you started. Learning the basics from a professional teacher is the best way to ensure you are fully prepared and less likely to suffer an injury as a result.
